Quick Answer

A loan EMI calculator works out the monthly instalment for any fixed-rate loan with the reducing-balance formula EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ / ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1), then adds the upfront processing fee to show the total cost of borrowing. For example, a ₹10,00,000 education loan at 10% over 7 years has an EMI of ₹16,601 and total interest of ₹3,94,499; with a 1% fee of ₹10,000, the total cost is ₹14,04,499. Use it for home, car, personal, education or business loans; it assumes a constant rate and on-time payments.

How This Calculation Works

  • Values calculate dynamically in real-time as you enter figures or adjust sliders.
  • The equation on the right is exactly what the calculator runs — check any result by hand.
Core Equation
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ / ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) Where: P = Principal loan amount r = Monthly interest rate = Annual rate / 12 / 100 n = Loan tenure in months Monthly Principal (month k) = EMI − Outstanding × r Monthly Interest (month k) = Outstanding balance × r Outstanding after payment k = Previous Outstanding − Monthly Principal

How to Use the Loan EMI Calculator

Quick 3-step guide for accurate and fast calculations

STEP 01

Enter your principal loan amount

In the Loan EMI Calculator, fill in Principal Loan Amount, Interest Rate (% p.a.), Tenure (Years) and Processing Fee (%).

STEP 02

Read your monthly emi

The Loan EMI Calculator instantly shows Monthly EMI, Total Interest Payable, Processing Fee (Upfront) and Total Cost of Loan, updating as you type.

STEP 03

Compare scenarios

Change Interest Rate (% p.a.) to see how it affects Monthly EMI, then check the formula below to verify the math.

Specific Instructions:

Enter the principal loan amount, the annual interest rate, the tenure in years and the lender's processing fee as a percentage. The calculator uses the standard reducing-balance EMI formula to show your monthly EMI, total interest payable, the upfront processing fee and the total cost of the loan (principal + interest + fee). It works for any fixed-rate loan — home, car, personal, education or business.

Loan EMI Calculator Formula

The Loan EMI Calculator uses the following formula, calculated in your browser as you change the inputs:

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ / ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) Where: P = Principal loan amount r = Monthly interest rate = Annual rate / 12 / 100 n = Loan tenure in months Monthly Principal (month k) = EMI − Outstanding × r Monthly Interest (month k) = Outstanding balance × r Outstanding after payment k = Previous Outstanding − Monthly Principal

Worked Example: Loan EMI Calculator

Education Loan: ₹10,00,000 | Rate: 10% p.a. | Tenure: 84 months (7 years) Monthly rate r = 10 / 12 / 100 = 0.00833 EMI = 10,00,000 × 0.00833 × (1.00833)⁸⁴ / ((1.00833)⁸⁴ − 1) ≈ ₹16,601 Total repayment: ₹13,94,499 | Total interest: ₹3,94,499 With a 1% processing fee (₹10,000): total cost ₹14,04,499

How EMI Is Calculated: The Formula Explained with Examples

EMI is calculated with the formula EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n − 1), where P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of monthly payments. For example, a ₹20,00,000 loan at 8.5% for 20 years has an EMI of about ₹17,356, and you repay roughly ₹41.66 lakh in total, of which about ₹21.66 lakh is interest.

Frequently Asked Questions — Loan EMI Calculator

What is an EMI on reducing balance?

All standard loans use a reducing balance (or diminishing balance) method. Each month, interest is charged only on the outstanding principal balance — not the original loan. As you pay down the principal each month, the interest component of your EMI decreases and the principal component increases. This is why early EMIs are mostly interest and later ones mostly principal.

What happens if I miss an EMI payment?

Missing an EMI triggers penal interest (typically 2–3% above the contracted rate on the overdue amount), harms your CIBIL credit score, and in the case of secured loans, can initiate recovery proceedings. If you anticipate difficulty, contact your lender proactively — most offer EMI moratorium or restructuring options.

How is the EMI split between principal and interest?

In an amortizing loan, each EMI is divided into an interest component and a principal component. The interest component equals the outstanding balance × monthly rate. The remaining amount of the EMI is the principal repaid. In early months, most of the EMI is interest; in later months, most is principal. The amortization schedule on this calculator shows the exact split for every month.
